A/Prof. Tom John

MEDICAL ONCOLOGIST | SENIOR CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW

More about A/Prof. Tom John

I have a unique opportunity to interface between the laboratory and the clinic. I can take a clinical problem, research it further in the lab and then take it back into the clinic. This means I can find solutions to clinical problems sooner.

My medical oncology areas of responsibility involve management of patients with lung cancer and familial cancers. My research interests currently involve the development and validation of Molecular Predictive and Prognostic Markers in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and the performance of clinical trials evaluating targeted biologic agents and small molecule inhibitors in lung cancer.

I recently published a study demonstrating that Cancer Testis (CT) antigens are not only poor prognostic markers, but also predict tumours likely to respond to chemotherapy. What is unclear is whether inducing these antigens to be expressed using demethylating agents also increases the likelihood of response to chemotherapy. I am using cell lines and xenografts to establish whether this observation can be used to clinically improve treatments for patients with lung cancer. I am also involved mesothelioma sequencing studies and the investigation of novel biomarkers that correlate with clinical endpoints.
