SAROS is a new service that uses the latest superficial x-ray therapy to treat people with skin cancer and some non-cancerous skin conditions. It’s a non-invasive, painless treatment that’s free for public patients. SAROS is based at Stawell Regional Health and treats people located in the Grampians and surrounding regions.
What is superficial X-ray therapy?
Superficial x-ray therapy is a key treatment option for people with skin cancer, or non-cancerous conditions that that have formed on or just below the surface.
The treatment destroys the unhealthy cells associated with skin lesions without damaging healthy tissue underneath or surrounding the area.
Cancerous or damaged cells are more sensitive to radiation and are destroyed by the treatment, while healthy cells repair themselves.
What does treatment involve?
Treatment typically consists of four to six 30-minute sessions administered twice a week, and treatment is usually completed within two to three weeks.
It is a painless procedure, just like having an x-ray. People receive treatment as an outpatient and can return to work and other activities immediately after treatment.
What are the benefits?
- Free for public patients
- Painless and non-invasive
- Can cure skin cancer and avoid surgery
- Can be provided after surgery to avoid recurrence
- Short outpatient sessions
- Return to work and other activities immediately after treatment
How can I make an appointment?

At the first appointment you’ll be assessed by a radiation oncologist to see if superficial x-ray therapy treatment is suitable for your skin cancer or condition.
