Gastrointestinal Cancers Program

Developing new treatments for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

The Gastrointestinal Cancers Program is seeking to understand the biological causes of cancers of the colon (bowel), biliary tract and stomach so that new treatments can be developed for these diseases. We are seeking to identify and target the major “pro-survival” proteins in these tumours and are testing if drugs that target the “epigenome” can prevent the growth and spread of these cancers.

ONCOGENIC TRANSCRIPTION LABORATORY

The health of the gastrointestinal system is reliant on a continual cycle of cell replacement. In cancers of the gastrointestinal system, this cycle is disrupted. We investigate the role of genes and proteins in the onset of cancer, with the goal of identifying new treatment targets for this disease.

CELL DEATH AND SURVIVAL LABORATORY

We study the molecular pathways that control the fate of a cell which are often deregulated in cancer cells. By understanding the survival factors that keep cancer cells alive we aim to develop new and effective drugs that can activate natural cell death or inhibit impaired survival mechanisms in tumour cells.
