Surgery

Surgery may be performed to remove cancerous or non-cancerous tumours. Sometimes radiation therapy or chemotherapy is undertaken before or after surgery to reduce the size of the tumour.

Receiving your surgery at the ONJ Centre

Before your operation, you will undergo a number of investigations such as scans and blood tests to assess the type, size and position of the tumour. In preparation for surgery, you will also receive a letter requesting you attend a preadmission clinic to complete a health assessment. You may also need to have a pre-anaesthetic clinic assessment.

Depending on the result of the operation and the extent of the cancer, you may need to have radiation therapy or chemotherapy once the surgical wound has healed. Surgery for cancer is performed in either the Austin Hospital's Surgery and Endoscopy Centre, or at The Surgery Centre at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
