As part of National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the volunteers who generously give their time to support patients, families and staff across Austin Health.
This year’s theme, ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, recognises the meaningful impact volunteering can have on both the community and the volunteers themselves.
For Brigit, volunteering became a way to support others during a difficult time in her own life.
When her sister became unwell overseas, Brigit found it hard not being able to be there to help. Volunteering in the ONJ Wellness Centre gave her an opportunity to support others while learning more about the experiences of patients and families navigating illness.
Since starting in August 2025, Brigit has found meaning in the simple but powerful act of being present for others.
“Feeling happy about doing something for others and the community we have” is what keeps her coming back.
One moment that has stayed with her was listening to a father speak about not being able to tell his daughter - who lives overseas - about his cancer diagnosis. Being someone he felt comfortable enough to open up to was deeply impactful for Brigit.
Volunteering has also made a positive difference in her own life. She says it keeps her active and reminds her to be grateful for what she has. She values the opportunity to connect with people going through difficult times, as well as the relationships she has built with staff.
For anyone considering volunteering, Brigit describes it as “a very satisfying experience - helping someone and contributing to what you believe in.”
Happy National Volunteer Week!
