More about Dr Erinna Lee

Being a researcher means that each work day is not defined by mundane tasks and rules. The freedom to make discoveries, the problem solving and the possibility of bettering human health is what I love.

In 2004, I commenced my PhD under the co-supervision of Professor Peter Colman and Dr. Douglas Fairlie at WEHI. During my PhD, I was exposed to X-ray crystallography, as well as techniques in biochemistry and cell biology. I then continued my postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Fairlie and was promoted to senior postdoctoral fellow at WEHI in 2012. In 2015, I undertook a joint appointment as a research fellow at ONJCRI and the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science.

I have always been interested in the processes of apoptosis, and now autophagy, which determines whether a cell lives or dies. In particular, I am exploring how these pathways can go awry leading to cancer and how we can exploit this information for therapeutic intervention. A large part of my work has involved developing peptide-based ligands that are highly selective for individual components of the apoptotic machinery. Such reagents have proven useful for unravelling the complex cell death pathway and providing proof-of-principle for anti-cancer drugs that work in an identical manner.

I am now also trying to understand the crosstalk between apoptosis and autophagy and determining the molecular switch that dictates whether a cell lives or dies.
