More about Dr Janson Tse

“Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.” - Seneca

My drive and passion for cancer research is deeply reflected in Seneca’s quote. My pursuit of a career as a cancer researcher allows me to make discoveries that help me understand how gastro-intestinal cancers progress and, more importantly, how to eradicate them. At the end of the day, if my discoveries have helped cancer patients in even the smallest of ways, then I will have lived my life well.

My interest in research began during my undergraduate degree at RMIT University, where I majored in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2010. The journey from drug discovery to patient bedside was always my particular area of interest. After undertaking a one-year internship at CSL Biotherapies, I realised that many new drugs had the propensity to fail when moving from initial discovery to clinical trial phase. I henceforth made it my goal in life to aid in the improvement of understanding and properly identifying how drugs work in order to improve their chances of success in clinical trials.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I undertook an honours degree in 2011 in the Oncogenic Transcription Laboratory at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Melbourne, in partnership with the University of Melbourne. My work focused on understanding the key survival pathways of colorectal cancers and how HDAC inhibitors could exploit these pathways in order to eradicate tumours. In 2012, I received an Australian Postgraduate Award that allowed me to pursue my PhD.

In 2017, I was awarded my PhD by the University of Melbourne and joined the Tumour Microenvironment and Cancer Signalling Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where I am now investigating the role of DCLK1 in tumour growth and EMT, the role of miR-21 in gastric tumour growth and metastasis, and a novel model to test Wnt inhibitors in cancer.
