Research Assistant

More about Marco Evangelista

I feel fortunate in that I am able to work with truly outstanding scientists toward the development of better cancer treatments in a role which I find to be challenging, stimulating, yet thoroughly enjoyable. This is made even more satisfying by the knowledge that my work may ultimately help patients to live longer, healthier lives.

After obtaining my Honours degree in Biochemistry at the University of Adelaide (2002) I worked for one year as a research technician in the Lysosomal Diseases Research Unit of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Adelaide, SA). After trying my hand at scientific equipment sales for a short period I found that I missed research, so re-located to Melbourne to take up a laboratory position at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). Here I worked for two years in the laboratory of Dr. Doug Fairlie (2004-2006) assisting in research on cell death and survival mechanisms, before moving overseas to work as a scientific writer at Centro di Ricerche E. Menni (Brescia, Italy), focusing on elucidating the clinical potential of stem cells derived from the human placenta (2006-2008).

In 2008 I returned to Australia and was fortunate to have been offered a position back in the laboratory of Dr. Fairlie, based first at WEHI (2008-2015), before moving to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute.
