More about Miriam Fuentes Guirado

My research aims to develop effective therapies for metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Treating metastatic breast cancer remains a significant challenge for physicians. Triple Negative Breast Cancers (TNBC) that lack oestrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and HER receptors are particularly onerous due to their resistance to anti-oestrogen or HER2-targeted therapies.

In my research, I study the role the tumour's microenvironment plays in metastatic disease, specifically focusing on a specialised structure that surrounds the normal epithelium of the breast, known as the Basement Membrane. The interactions between tumour cells and Basement Membranes promote tumour cell survival, migration and invasion. The therapeutic potential of disrupting these interactions in TNBC cases has yet to be translated to the clinic.
