Research Assistant

More about Tom Witkowski

My favourite feeling in the world is when an experiment or test allows a patient to begin a new therapy strategy. It not only extends their life but also improves the quality; the feeling is priceless.

During my undergraduate study I first began my scientific career in Molecular Pathology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at the age of 20. This introduction was the perfect platform to develop molecular skills and techniques which I use in a research environment today. After graduating from Laboratory Medicine I completed my Honours at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Laboratory, specialising in Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition in the invasive front of gastric cancers.

I now work in the Translational Genomics and Epigenomics Laboratory of the ONJCRI in collaboration with the Melbourne Melanoma Project. This role allows me to undertake technologically advanced molecular testing of melanoma patients as well as develop assays of my own to impact upon patient management. Areas of interest include liquid biopsy of circulating tumour DNA and T-cell clonality analysis by Next Generation Sequencing.

Education

2011 Laboratory Medicine (BAppSc), RMIT University

2012 Bachelor of Science (Hons) (BSc), Department of Pathology, University of Melbourne
